The Dan could be an excellent rainbow fishery if the government stocked it and allowed restricted patrolled fishing. He can no longer be trusted to take his medicine and I have had to carry him across rivers. By the way he casts like he dances, dreadfully. But no one tells better fishing stories or stories about his single life better than Ed. No matter how many times he repeated them. Ed needed more than one fishing buddy because no one wants fish as much as him. The fist time my wife met him he brought a rifle to Bar B Q and got two rabbits for the grill. For our last float we plan to float the upper Sac in Northern Cal. I will miss hearing Ed yell "Hog On."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31699898.post-23365411951871114252015-08-02T04:06:31.002-04:002015-08-02T04:06:31.002-04:00i was told by a jewish friend that pigs , unlike r...i was told by a jewish friend that pigs , unlike ruminants compete directly with humans for food. that meant that food which could have supported poor people was used to provide meat for rich people. i had always thought that it was to avoid the pork tapeworm. mohawknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31699898.post-15909008469481807322015-07-25T02:55:56.925-04:002015-07-25T02:55:56.925-04:00I always thought the reason was that when these la...I always thought the reason was that when these laws were written the Hebrews were largely nomadic. Supposed most American style is affected by Christianity, then who said that God allowed pork to Christians or to Americans?. If Torah forbid pork, and Jesus bibles do now allow eating pork, then pork is still forbidden to Christians too. Pork is not clean, full of maggot, and cause several not good things. As it is easy produced with much money revenues there is still persistence to forbid it.
About your choice mixing meat and dairy (milk), you are right.. The confirmation comes from Islam tradition. Mixing meat and dairy is not healthy and causes sickness if it comes from same animal. If sources of milk and meat are different animals, then no risk to eat mixture of them.
A Palestiniannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31699898.post-2374482800289483272015-05-25T20:54:14.605-04:002015-05-25T20:54:14.605-04:00Come to the Mountians of Western North Carolina we...Come to the Mountians of Western North Carolina we have some lovely streams and a few of them are a bit off the beaten path Four wheel drive truck and an hour hike with no pesky people asking you how the fish are biting!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31699898.post-26286545702361341282015-05-10T09:31:19.032-04:002015-05-10T09:31:19.032-04:00As a convert to Reform, I talked with many rabbis,...As a convert to Reform, I talked with many rabbis, and was never turned away or felt rejected. Thankfully - I felt so vulnerable and out of my depth, turning me away would have devastated me! My sponsor rabbi was supportive and still asked the hard questions. It was the perfect balance.

I so appreciate the willingness of rabbis to take on oversight of conversion - we require a lot of extra work on top of normal job duties. Thank you!

Regular Jews (non-rabbis) are another story. Some of them ask lots of questions (especially the kind forbidden by halakhah, asking about conversion), make implications and assumptions, and can be pains. Some are wonderful, supportive, open up their homes and families, and can be a life line. Some are painful to watch, coming to services weekly and involved in temple activities, and still utterly baffled why anyone would ever want to be Jewish, like it's an unpleasant burden. I feel like I won the lottery, and they are baffled why I would ever want millions of dollars! (metaphorically)

Settings of Silver had an excellent summary of the historical reasons why Jewish communities stopped converting people (after being open/enthusiastic about conversion); in summary, lots of death. The Jewish aversion to conversion seems to be a learned and internalized trauma - from the Romans' point of view, the most effective kind of policy. Now, millennia later, we are still enforcing their ( and subsequent regimes') policies for them.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31699898.post-86258895164401034212015-05-08T01:52:21.683-04:002015-05-08T01:52:21.683-04:00Rabbi, what are you doing? I think to truly understand and appreciate the new testament one has to read the old testament. Jesus casting out legion from the man to the pigs I don't believe why pigs are unclean as stated they don't chew their cud maybe pigs were readily available, maybe cause he knew it would not be a loss food source for the people of the village. Also side note my youngest son is named from both the new and old testament, Luke Elijah Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
